I live in lantana florida. I spotted this bird who has been hanging in my backyard for 2 months now. Is this a yellow oriole? Are they ever spotted in florida? Really would love to know if anyone has answers

Hi gartmand and welcome to BirdForum from the Staff and Moderators.

I've moved your post to the Identification Forum, as it will get better attention here. I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you.

To me there are 3 options Hooded, Altamira and Spot-breasted.First and foremost do you have any other photos or at least larger versions of either of the two. (800x800)

Altimira Oriole has yet to occur in Florida, and Hooded has only been documented in FL once...

So you think it is a spot-breated? From the photos given.

I agree with Spot-breasted Oriole. As BirderBF indicates, it is pretty much the only orange oriole with a black facial mask occurring in Florida, and Lantana is the right part of the state for it. Spot-breasted Oriole is generally encountered in suburban settings, which this appears to be.

Incidentally, it is and introduced bird in the U.S. (from Central America), but it is well established and ABA-countable.

Best,
Jim

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/macaulaylibrary has a large collection that can be searched and listened to online. Try to compare with the sound you have heard.

Hi,

I think it is quite safe to call the bird a Spot-breasted Oriole based on the photos you have already given. In addition, your description of the song is a perfect match for the song of a Spot-breasted Oriole. Here is a direct link to a recording and photos of that species: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAbou...iole.html#fig1

Incidentally, I was in your area (right near Lantana) over the Labor Day weekend, and birded much of southeast Florida. I saw my first Spot-breasted Oriole in the Miami area at that time. It is a beautiful bird, and certainly a great one to have for your yard list!

Best,
Jim
