Usual activity to report from the garden, only surprise is a male chaffinch starting to eat the nyjer seed. Anyone seen that before ?

I can't believe we had a juvenile Siskin here. Never ever seen a young one before, there must be a pair nesting somewhere nearby. We usually only get Siskins in Winter & adults only.

When does autumn start, as far as bird numbers go ?

I guess when they are not visiting our feeders they will be as happy to feed off thistles as any other finch especially if other food sources are not readily available. You are right though they are more of a foraging finch but I have seen them eating nyger seed here, especially when hoovering up beneath the feeders.

I rarely (if ever) see the Greenfinch on the nyger seed

Autumn has already started with Waders but as far as passerines go, I would say the largest numbers occur in Sept/Oct.

Still haven't ID'd a visitor to the feeder from the other day, but the lighting was harsh and the bird was in the shade, viewed through a screen and from a distance, so it's hard to ID, even with a call.

Otherwise, there were 3 cardinals, 1 male and 2 females at the feeders two mornings again, the usual american crows calling and flying about, some black vultures perched on the roof and the neighbours roof and this afternoon I finally ID'd the duck species that hangs around, an American Widgeon.

Had 4 stock doves in the other day. Chiffchaff singing a little and had a few trips round my daughters trampoline net gathering insects. 2 Bullfinch and plenty of blue and great tits. My feeders will be back in action soon, fixed my feeding station, just got to get some food.

Another juvenile Robin appeared this morning, I think this is the Third Brood from my resident pair.... I mentioned the vocal Robins yesterday, now I know why

We have some very fluffy Dunnocks just appeared from a bonfire we are preparing so this must be quite a late brood. The Blackbirds are down to 1 pair but everything else seems to be there, Robins and maturing youngsters, still plenty finches and tits, not Bullfinches or LTT's though. Chiff Chaff has been visiting again and have seen the Wren once more which I am so pleased about.

Nuthatch and Redpoll still coming but GSW has been absent for a few days.

Mind you we are out 11 hours a days at work so we don't see a lot of them until weekend anyhow.

Both seed feeders and the fatballs were empty when I got home last night. Had been full that morning, before the sparrow lynchmob descended !

I expect a similar scenario when I get back tonight.....

First visitors to the feeders this morning! Only recently finished our garden so feeders etc when up 2 days ago.

Had about 6 or 7 blue and great tits feeding on the seeds this morning, was very pleased! Hopefully start getting some more exciting birds into the garden as winter starts to take its grip on us and the birds
