We currently have the same photo used here for Collared Scops-Owl (O. lettia) and Indian Scops-Owl (O. bakkamoena). What's up?

They're sometimes lumped as Collared Scops O. bakkamoena, so using that label in the gallery got this photo assigned to both. Apparently they are best separated by voice, so it may be impossible to tell what our collection of photos actually refers to.

I've sent a pm to Sumit (the photographer) - he may know which it is.

The location (Sultanpur) seems to be near Hyderabad in central India, which does not help much, as one form is recident there and the other migrates south to southern india in winter. The date that the photo is taken has not been entered in the gallery entry. The description that the photographer has given sounds like he is talking about the presplit species and not aware that there could be any confusion.

Most likely here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultanpur_National_Park

50 km south of New Delhi only.

Sumit replied to my pm - he says that the post-split species should be Indian Scops-Owl (O. bakkamoena) - I reckon we go with that.

I have found one image of a bird labeled with O. bakkamoena which is clearly outside the area of Indian SO. However, it is within the area of Sunda SO which also seems to have been part of the same complex. I have PM'ed kctsang asking if he knows which of these it really is -- I guess Sunda? I now have received answers from KC Tsang. They believe that most likely the image shows Sunda SO (Otus lempiji) with an outside possibility of it being Collared SO (Otus lettia). Definitely not Indian SO.

It therefore seems we do not at the moment have any likely images of the post-split Collared SO in the gallery.
