Stuart,

In case of emergency I might be able to find a fixed 40x and a zoom (15-45x ???) from my old & faithful TS-1. They are almost unused and in their original boxes, but to be honest, they are not as nice as the lower power EPs (they have short ER and the power brings the limits of the objective quite visible), but please let me know if you are interested and we can to figure out a price.

Best regards,

Ilkka

hi Ilkka, many thanks for replying, i think you are right about the power, better i go with a lower power eyepiece, but i will keep your kind offer very much in mind. regards stuart. p.s. how do you regard the ts - 1/2.

Since the TS-1 was my first spotting scope and I used it for my birdwatching for more than 20 years, it is probably not surprising that I regard it very highly. It is sturdy and IMO extremely well made - and even optically quite nice. Obviously its coatings can't compete with current super-multilayers, but apart of its slightly lower contrast, narrower FOV and shorter eye relief, at 20x to 27x it compares favourably with many modern spotting scopes. It is very sharp, easy to view and even CAs are very well controlled. It is just that such old scopes may not always be mechanically in perfect condition - at least mine isn't.

Best regards,

Ilkka

ps. I think someone on this forum has said that the Opticron eyepieces (HR ?) should fit to the Kowa threads. I also remember that Mirador and maybe Bushnell used to have compatible threads.

I think that's right, Ikka. That same eyepiece thread was used on many Japanese made brands. Probably most were made the same factory. It might still be used on current Bushnell Spacemasters, etc.

Having had personal experience here I'll field this one. I'm assuming what we're actually talking about here are TSN1/2's, otherwise I'm not sure about compatability but if these are different scopes but have the same thread size as TSN's then the following should still fit.

The only two Opticron e.p's I'm aware will fit are the Opticron HDF and SDL zoom eyepieces. I don't think the fixeds ones will fit.

One thing though, to prevent the 'barrel rolling' you need to put some form of washer in between the scope and eyepiece. I used an old binocular lens cap and cut it into a ring but that wasn't enough so I bought a tap washer to put on as well and that fixed it. My dad now has the Opticron HDF zoom that I had mounted on his TSN 4 and he loves it to bits. Far superior to any eyepiece you can think of that will fit these scopes I'm sure.

Hope all goes well.

And I assumed that Stuart meant the even older Kowa TS-2 (http://www.geocities.jp/rutile_67/tanuki/digisco.jpg), which to my knowledge has different thread design from the TSN1/2/3/4. There has been adapters for mounting old eyepieces to new scopes, but not vice versa.

Ahhh, in which case everything I said is meaningless. I'm getting used to it by now.
