Here is a challenge for you. I have just returned from my first trip to the west side of the Atlantic staying at Riu Lupita, Playacar,Mexico. Here are a couple of photos of a Kingbird, a new species for me, but I read that the best id feature is voice. Although I saw several Kingbirds they all seemed to remain silent.

Is anyone brave enough or able to suggest whether this a Tropical or Couch's Kingbird.

No. Well, not me, anyway.

I did tick Tropical when I was in the Yucatan on a short vacation one year but I could only do it by call (they were nesting at the time, right on our hotel grounds! Very handy.) My guide (Howell & Webb) suggests it's not possible otherwise. Would love to hear any suggestions, though.

No idea about the Kingbird I'm afraid but I wouldn't mind a review of the Riu Lupita as that's one of my two hotel possibilities for a holiday in March.

I saw lots of Kingbirds while in Playacar stopping at the Riu Yucatan Hotel in 2000,but could only ID a few of them when they called which were all Tropical Kingbirds.
