Hi Tom,

With the combination of a rufous nape, dark centered scapulars I would think Fiery-necked Nightjar and a male due to the white outer tail feathers visible.

Could be wrong..

Don't have books to check right now (I don't remember whether there is a similar looking species of nightar in South Africa or not), but I would agree with Mark on that one: Fiery-necked was my 1st impression as well.
