Barn Swallow? Christmas Island

I photographed a group of Barn Swallows on a wire between two buildings in Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island 10S, 105E last week. The following individual appears to be a bit different - it has a fair bit of white on it's face and it has white patches on its undertail. Can anyone explain the plumage?

Regards, Laurie

Hi laurie.
The undertail markings and white throat seem about right for a juvenile of the SE Asian race gutturalis, which is also the race that migrates to Australia in small numbers each year.
Bruce.

Sorry Laurie - I should have given the source of that ID above.

The major Australian Field Guides (Simpson & Day and Pizzey & Knight) don't really illustrate the juv all that well - although the text in P&K does tend to highlight that the appearance can be as in the bird you photographed.

However, if you can get hold of a copy of Craig Robson's "Birds of South East Asia" (either the 2000 hardback or the 2005 Field Guide, you will find that the illustration and accompanying short text for juvenile gives a pretty fair match for what you photographed.

Cheers,
Bruce

Agree with Barn Swallow - some nice images here including a similar looking bird with pale throat - http://orientalbirdimages.org/birdim...159&pagesize=1
