Pine siskin (I hope, I hope) Santa Cruz, CA
Shot this bird hanging out with American Goldfinches. It's bill is too small for a finch and it's back has yellow stripes on it. Is it a Pine Siskin?? Or just another strange looking house Finch? You guys rock! Always grateful for the assist... Sorry about the quality of the shots, it would not come out in the open.

Didn't even have to open the thumbnails to see that this is, indeed, a Pine Siskin.

Pine Siskins for sure. I Had 10 of them at my feeders just northwest of Fort Worth this morning. First one of the season showed up about two weeks ago. They, along with a bunch of Gold Finches that have recently arrived, have been eating up my Nyger seed almost as fast as I can put it out this past week.

Yes, I saw my first siskens recently. I almost overlooked them as they blended in with the now drably colored goldfinches. No other bird I can remember has a brown streaked body with yellow wingbars.

There has been an irruption of Pine Siskins in the Eastern US this year.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, in Kempton, Pennsylvania, doesn't count just hawks. This year they counted 11,000 Pine Siskins, with a high of 1435 on 11/11. The numbers seen since 1991 have ranged between 100 and 1200. Mike |

I'm beginning to think I have more Pine Siskins coming to my feeders so far this winter season than I do Goldfinches and it hasn't been that way in years past.

Yeah their having an enormous year. In my decade birding/living in FL we might see one Pine Siskin in the state somewhere. This year the are hundreds in the panhandle of the state and small numbers are being seen all over the place all the way down to the Everglades!
