Well, the first one was a chickadee, one of two species. Found one sharp shinned hawk. Starling and house sparrow did not make an appearance. I did hear the latter.
I moved my bird feeder and cut down a dead bush, a favorite perch. Birds did not come back.

First bird of the year was a Carrion Crow, then I girded my loins and took of for a 'New Years Day Bash' around NE France. White-tailed Eagle and Common Crane were only to be expected, Taiga and Tundra Bean Goose, Ferruginous Duck, Black-throated Diver, 6 sp. of Woodpecker, Bohemian Waxwing, Short-toed Treecreeper, Crested Lark and a load of Hawfinch were all good birds for a U.K. birder. Finished the day on 125, ending with Hedge Accentor ( and rather chilly "extremities"!).

Myself and a team of three other birders managed 137 species on Jan 1st in Kent. I think I've managed one more species since then: Blackcap in my garden. So 138 so far.... Cheers, Andy. |
