Swainson's Hawk? SE Brazil (1 Viewer)

A friend took this picture last week of this flying hawk in Mongaguá, a beachside town in southern São Paulo State. We are thinking it's a dark phase Swainson's Hawk, but not totally sure. The pic is kinda poor so we can't see many plumage details...

I hope your friend doesn't mind, but I lightened the photo to get a better look. I don't know if the range is correct, but the light tail, white on the breast, long slender wings with 4 "fingers" make me think White-tailed hawk. But then I've never seen one so wait for other's confirmation.

p.s. if your friend is annoyed by me copying his photo please say so and I will remove it.

oops, Jan got there first.

Hey Octavio! If I had any experience on IDing juvenile Hawks, I'd certainly try to help. Otherwise, good luck! hehe

Cheers and all the best wishes for 2009!
