Swainson's Hawk? SE Brazil (1 Viewer)

A friend took this picture last week of this flying hawk in Mongaguá, a beachside town in southern São Paulo State. We are thinking it's a dark phase Swainson's Hawk, but not totally sure. The pic is kinda poor so we can't see many plumage details...

Hi Aracari.

Although rather similar to Swainson´s Hawk regarding narrow wing tip and the pale area at the base of the outer primaries and so on, your hawk has all going for a juvenile/immature White-tailed Hawk. Note the pale breast patch (variable in size) and the pinche in secondaries near the body.

I hope your friend doesn't mind, but I lightened the photo to get a better look. I don't know if the range is correct, but the light tail, white on the breast, long slender wings with 4 "fingers" make me think White-tailed hawk. But then I've never seen one so wait for other's confirmation.

p.s. if your friend is annoyed by me copying his photo please say so and I will remove it.

Thanks a lot, the White-tailed Hawk is certainly much more common here.
