My Canuck List!(mainly Manitoba plus out of town trips)
Been under the weather and staying away from it since the

Overwintering White-throated Sparrow
Was surprised to find a White-throated Sparrow at some feeders

Wind Chill!!!

-5o tommorow! Did get a new bird in this weather today! 8.Snow Buntings-two of them feeding on the shoulder of the road near Oakbank. First birding excursion of the year
Went for birding walk to some well known feeders near Assiniboine
Park today. Weather -28'c,-42'c windchill While my face was freezing managed to find 3 new species for the year. White-breasted Nuthatch,Downy Woodpecker and Hairy Woodpecker. Puddle ducks in frozen water!
Had the day off and with more cold weather coming decided

Grand beach
First visit to Grand Beach this year!Few birds around but

Great Grey Owl
Was surprised to see this species within city limits.Two coworkers
and I seen one while driving to work!Flew right in front of us early in the morning than landed on a light post.We doubled back to have a better look whereupon the owl flew off! Great Grey Owl? Last edited by borealowl47 : Monday 18th May 2009 at 19:05. |

Correction!
I will admit it do not feel comfortable with two of my sightings
The Great Grey Owl, it was way too dark and seen too briefly to identify. Why did I arrive at a Great Grey Owl ,large, eliminating all but Great Horned Owl,also could make out the cigar shape of the owl when flying which reminded me of past sightings of Great Greys. Hoary Redpoll,just do not know enough about their difference from Common.Did post a photo here for identification but should learn to know them by myself. Grand Beach/first migrants
Was out at Grand beach last weekend ,same winter denizens as before.
But on a Saturday dusk walk heard a 24.Northern Saw-whet Owl. On Sunday got a few 25.Evening Grosbeaks in with Pine Grosbeaks,redpolls,chickadees,nuthatches,crows and ravens. And this morning my first sign of spring 26.Canada Geese. Last edited by borealowl47 : Thursday 19th March 2009 at 21:09. |

Grand Beach weekend
Was again out last weekend(March20,21,22)at the beach.
New birds were a Northern Harrier driving out there.Went for a walk out to the channel where I saw 7 Sharp-tailed Grouse and 1 Western Meadowlark.There is now open water at the channel!On Saturday saw 1 Bald Eagle moving north. 27.Northern Harrier 28.Sharp-tailed Grouse 29.Western Meadowlark 30.Bald Eagle Some photos of birds seen; |

Wild Turkey/Grand Beach Provincial Park
Seen a couple of toms as I drove back on Hwy#59 from Grand Beach today.
31.Wild Turkey Grand Beach/Grand Marias- Migration is still slow here but did see more Canada Geese.Still a W. Meadowlark and Sharp-tailed Grouse around.There was some Gulls at the open water but could not identify before some snowmobilers scared them off.Seen one Hawk as I drove out there Friday. Grand Beach/Assiniboine Park
Migration has started to pick up in Manitoba in the last week.

Lunchtime Birding
Decided to check out the local retention pond close to where I

Dodging Canada Geese
After avoiding three pairs of ill mannered Canada Geese who were
nesting managed to get an American Tree Sparrow on my year list. Local retention pond
After hearing about a Common Loon being seen at a local
pond decided to check it out.No loon but did see a lone Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and many Herring Gulls for my list. Singing is starting to pick up!
In my meanderings since my last post got these birds,
64.Red-breasted Merganser 65.Northern Shoveler 66.Pine Siskin Asinniboine Park,April 25-birding excursion Did not bode well when I arrived at the park,Snow! ![]() But when I heard all the birds singing the snow was quickly forgotten! Off-leash dog park
Dared to venture into a local park which is off-leash for
