Problem viewing raw files

I've just saved a load of canon raw files to DVD and find I can't view them, just get icons. I'm using windows XP, what do I need to view them please.

Thanks for any help

John

I had this problem when I first used RAW files - they wouldn't show as thumbnails. I am a nikon user so went to nikons web site and downloaded something from there (NEF thumbnail updater) - Nikon's version of RAW is called NEF. This shows thumnails of files when using "explore" - whether they are a a drive or dvd. Perhaps you have to do something similar with Canon?

Many thanks rezmole, unless someone using canon and DPP can throw some light on it I'll have a trawl through Canon's site but I've always found it a bit of a maze!

The software I use is called "digital photo professional", and I'm sure it's a freebie that came with the camera, if that's any help.

Edit - I see your problem's with DVDs, sorry!

If you view them via Canon' zoom browser' that came with your Camera you should be OK, or are you trying to view them from a Standalone DVD player?

Roy,
I'm trying to view them using windows xp inbuilt software.
I didn't install Zoom Browser as I try to keep installing large programs to a minimum to save memory space. I was wondering/hoping if there is a windows 'patch' that would allow viewing of raw files, if there isn't then I'll load in Zoom Browser.

It's a pity DPP hasn't got an import facility, it would help a lot to have it all under one roof so to speak.

Many thanks

John

John, have you tried the Microsoft windows xp raw viewer - its a free down load (just Google 'windows xp raw viewer' ). It could depend on what Camera you are using as they all produce different raw files and the Microsoft viewer may not be up to date with later Cameras.

edit: I have just tried viewing a raw file on DVD via Canons DPP and it works fine !

Thanks for the info Roy,

I had a look at windows xp raw viewer and it doesn't seem to support the 400D or 50D but windows Live Photo Gallery does, using Codec files direct from Canon, so I'll have a look at this.

I did manage to check the files I saved to DVD by transferring folders to My Computer then drag and dropping them into DPP, a bit long-winded but it served the purpose for the moment, now I can see about getting myself organised properly.

Many thanks again for all your help.

John
