When can I move a sparrows nest?

Hello, I know very little about birds so I am here to ask for help. I have some sparrows who are using a hole just under my roof tiles for their nest site which is fine. The problem is that it is directly above my front door so that their droppings are immediately outside my front door which makes it difficult to come into the house with stepping in the droppings. I would like to close the hole so that they can't use it and then build a bird box in my garden or create another hole in the roof for them. However I don't want to close the hole when they are using it so my question is do they nest all of the year round or is there a time when they will not be using their nest? I hope someone can help please.

Welcome to BF, idkwia. House Sparrows are not nesting now but will be prospecting very shortly (if they haven't already started looking, I know 'mine' have) so one of these:

...could be your answer. House Sparrow like nesting communally so putting up a 'terrace' to the side of your door and blocking off the hole could be a good plan. Good luck.

Joanne
