Caciques and cowbirds, Iguazú, Argentina
Some birds of prey again, pictures taken in late August in Iguazú National Park
My IDs are as follows: bf248 and bf256 - Red-rumped cacique (Cacicus haemorrhous; Cacique); but this guessed mostly by the iris color bf273 - Solitary cacique (Cacicus solitarius; Boyero negro) bf241 - Giant cowbird (Scaphidura oryzivora; Tordo gigante) bf261 - Screaming cowbird (Molothrus rufoaxillaris; Tordo pico corto) |

bf273 is a bit problematic. Unfortunately it doesn't show the rump, and the face-sides are not shown perfectly either, meaning that it is difficult to accurately judge the eye-colour (the blue eyes of the Red-rumped can be surprisingly difficult to see under some circumstances + there's the issue of eyes of juv's). However, it is likely a pair of Red-rumped based on the fact that the photo shows two individuals perched relatively high out in the open - something you're just not going to see very often in the Solitary, which is a species that generally stays rather low, mainly within cover, and is, as could be expected from its name, rather solitary. Admittedly, based on my experiance, Solitary from the southern (and eastern) part of its range do appear to be more willing to stay out in the relatively open (but still rather low), and pairs are seen sometimes. Nevertheless, a pair of Red-rumped is still more likely.

I'm not sure if it's of any help, but here's another picture of bf273, more face-sided.

I do see something light at the eyes, but if this is a hint of the eyes of a Red-rumped or just reflections I really can't say.
