Photo Rescue
Well I just had a positively hairy last hour.
After spending a couple of hours at the swash and taking over 250 photos, I put the compact flash in my computer and I get that dreaded exclamation blinker on my task bar saying that data has been lost. This has never happened to me before. I quickly did a search of lost photos here and found the link to PhotoRescue. I downloaded the trial version first to see if my pics were still there and sure enough they were. I very willingly paid my 29.00 and within minutes I had all the recovered photos copied into a folder in my computer. Now, I have no idea if any of the pics were worth 29.00 but it sure is nice to know it is here for future problems.

Yes it is and I suggest that you bring it up and save it to your favorites immediately. This way you won't waste time as I did looking for an old thread.

I'm glad that you got to save your photos. I hope that they turned out well!

LOL, well out of all of the recaptured photos, I think I wound up saving about 40.
Nice to know I'm covered for the next year though if it should happen again.

I wish I would have done this yesterday! I got to within about 15ft of two chough and took a number of photo's. I had looked at them on the camera screen and they looked pretty good but, when we got back - unable to read the files. Ah well, guess I'll have to go back and try again.

Kiki,
It's still worth trying PhotoRescue even if you've used the camera since losing the images on your card. The package is able to identify images which haven't yet been overwritten. Checking to see if there's anything there to recover is free - the package will show you thumbnails of the images it finds. If your choughs are there as thumbnails then you simply pay the purchase price of the package and you can recover the full image. I have the software on my laptop and it's got me out of a few holiday jams! |

This is correct. It even re-captured images I had taken the previous day and had deleted off the card.

Good question Christine. At the bottom of their page, there is a phone number for Belgium, so I would think that you could still avail yourself of it. But why don't you contact their support and ask them ahead of time. (the link is at the top of the page)

One interesting addition here. I recently purchased a Lexar CompactFlash card, 512mb., 40x. The price included a $20 rebate, which made the purchase attractive. When it arrived I was surprised to see that not only did it come with its own dedicated card reader, but it included "Image Rescue" software.
When I accidentally overwrote the original version of a good photo of a bird the other day, I stopped cursing long enough to realize that I might still have the image on the CompactFlash card. By using "Image Rescue," I was able to extract that file from among the images still on the card. It made my day, I'll tell you. |

It's get's even better for me too Doug. I just got a follow-up email from PhotoRescue and I was mistaken when I thought the 29. covered me for a year. Apparantly it is a one time charge for me to use for as long as I like. Pretty neat huh?

I'm in the UK and I bought it on-line and downloaded the software from their site. There were no issues at all with the company being American and the purchaser being Brit. harvelle |
