Teal male & fem.
Can anyone tell me if these are Green Winged Teal an American suggest they are i took these pics in UK.

They are Eurasian Teal, which used tobe just a subspecies of American Green Winged, but is now a full species. The main feature is the horizontal white stripe on the body as opposed to a vertical one on the American species.

The drake is certantly a Eurasian or common teal. As for the female from the picture alone it would be impossible to tell. I have kept both races in captivity and in the hand the females are virtually identical. Some American females might be a shade larger , but that would not be reliable ID feature.
I know they are supposed to be different species these days , but anyone who has closely handled and watched these two teal at close quarters would have serious doubts about this. |
