Who built this nest???

Hello all,

First of all I hope I am in the good forum for this request.

A friend photographied that nest within a Eastern bluebird nest box in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada (near Vermont, USA).

It doesn't look as a hemynoptera nest but I think it is something created by diptera larvae. Am I wrong???

Any idea about which kind of insects (family/genus/species) built it???

Thank you,

Michel

Hello Michel,

Welcome to the Forum. To be honest I don't know what your item is. I suspect that it is Hymenopterous in origin, but I cannot gaurantee that. I think your best bet, would be to Email the picture to any of the Canadian Natural History Museums. They will certainly know what it is.

Harry

Hello Harry,

Funally the suspect #1 is a little moth who would have parasitized a bumblebees nest!!!

This little moth would have been from genus Aphomia (Pyralidae family) which is specialized on Bumblebee parasiting!

I just learned something myself!!!

Cheers,

Michel
