Curlew ageing UK - 05/04/09

Does this rusty colouring on this curlew, indicate an age change, i.e. moulting. or is this just the norm.

I don't think you can tell wether or not it is moulting from this photo. But since now is the time they moult it probably is.
You can tell it is not a first winter bird since they have shorter bills then adults do.
I can tell you something about the moult of Eurasian Curlews though:
First winter Eurasian Curlews moult to their first summer plumage between mid-february and april. This moult is only partial. Between august and october the birds then moult to their non-breeding plumage. This is a complete moult. Between january and may the birds then moult to their breeding plumage. This is very variable. Sometimes it only includes few head and body feathers and sometimes it includes all of the head and body feathers, plus some rectriges (tail feathers), tertials and wing coverts.
