Hi all from Dundee in Scotland!

Think I saw a Marsh Harrier on the north shore of the river Tay at Monorgan (between Invergowrie and Longforgan).
It flew low with occasional upward swoops. I've seen many birds of prey but this was a new one to me, and this seems the most likely candidate. It did seem very large with a wingspan much wider than a buzzard & more like a heron. Mostly light brown with black wingtips. Immpressive!

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from the entire staff here at BirdForum

You might want to duplicate your query in the Bird Identification sub-forum as you're likely to get quite a few suggestions.

Well done with the Marsh Harrier - aren't they superb birds.

Keep an eye on the Scottish Bash Discussion thread We usually have a few each year and they are all great fun. You'd be most welcome to join us if you can manage.

Hi trolljester

You should come along to the local RSPB group which meets once a month between Sept and April. We also have outdoor meetings and have one coming up at the end of this month, when we are going to Dunkeld and loch of the lowes. You are more than welcome to join us.

Superb, it was spectacular Delia! As I'd never seen one before I wondered if was a foriegn import that had escaped and it was only after consulting books & online images I realised it was in all probability a Marsh Harrier. Are they more common up here now? And thanks for the invite to 'The Bash' might just come along. Cheerz

I lived at no.8 Holding Longforgan for a short time during the war,the bottom end of their fields led through an avenue of trees directly into Castle Huntley where we were free to roam around the grounds and also to the castle which was wide open to the world and completely unvandalised, a few years after the war on return visits to the holding, the Castle became an establishment for wayward young women and run by nuns, I often delivered strawberries to them and had to run the gauntlet of young cat calling young girls. The Castle as you will know is now a penal establishment.I did enjoy living and revisiting the area and remember Snabs where all the cyclists gathered from Dundee. Thanks for brining back some lovely memories.
. Regards Dougie
