Nightjar - Yanacocha, Ecuador January 08

Hi all, wondered if you anyone would like to confirm an ID for me.
This nightjar was digiscoped at Yanacocha in January 08.
I think at the time we identified it as a Band-winged Nightjar.
Is this correct?!?!
Thanks in advance for any posts.

On checking The Birds of Ecuador, Field Guide Ridgely et. al. (2001) it seems like the only likely possibility. It is the only one that that is widespread in that area. The only other likely nightjar would be the Swallow-tailed which is much more rufous and lack the "eye-brow." The way it is posed, you can't see the white-collar that would have helped pin it down.

Lovely photo. I hope to get a bunch when I'm there in August.

Yes, nice photo of Band-winged Nightjar. Oh you will surely get a bunch in Ecuador! Just amazing birding.

Those are lovely photos, I agree with the few I'm familiar with.

I'll only have one day in Ecuador before leaving for a Galapagos cruise, so I've arranged a birding tour while the rest of our party go on a city tour. The bird tour was arranged by Bellavista. I got a couple of bird lists from the tour company and have been studying those I'm likely to see to become a little knowledgeable, but even that is a daunting task.

Hi Mark:

good gallery stuff!! i esp like the "mood shots" w/ swallow-tailed kite and the condor. reminiscent of my '06 trip, where our group had s/t's on pvm road in some numbers, sailing in and out of the clouds or perched on the tops of trees just back from the road. we did pappalacta but not antisana.

am returning for my third trip in july, and specifically requested antisana on our first day out of quito. here's hoping for decent conditions!

we are having tropical birding put together a custom e. slope trip for us this go round, including guango, san isidro, guac ridge/loreto road, and ending up for 3 days at wild sumaco.

hopefully, this time out will be a little better prepared in the photog department- but at some spots i have been to, like the el mirador motel and eatery in los bancos, really i feel like you might get passers w/ a point-and-shoot just by hanging around the feeders!

great stuff thanks for the link,

kind regards,
UTC

Beautiful photos. A true pleasure to see them. Ecuadorian birding is so incredible. Ive spent several months there and would love to go back.
In the photos, the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird is actually Buff-tailed Coronet and the Ruffous Motmot looks like Broad-billed to me.

good birding,
Pat

Hey guys and thanks for your comments.
MariettaBirder you will enjoy Bellavista I am sure.
UTC sounds like you have a good trip! The feeders at Los Bancos are great. It was raining when I was there and just spent the whole afternoon watchin them. Never a dull moment.
Patrick thanks for the ID check. I have 2 pages of what I thought were Rufous -tailed but I presume you are meaning the shots where the bird has the wings up (bathing in the rain) is the coronet? I probably thought it was a female/imm or something. Will look into the Motmot. Would appreciate any further id checks.
