Hong Kong's first Great Thick-knee
Found this morning by Mai Po Reserve Manger Bena Smith while guiding the winners of the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant around Mai Po (not the worst job in the world, you might say!)
A true professional Bena, he not only bothered to look out of the hide when he had plenty of scope for distraction, but abandoned the group to confirm the ID and got the message out to HK birders within minutes. Apparently the Miss Hong Kongs displayed little interest - but then again - Ooh lookI 've got a Great thick -knee is straight out of the Frankie Howard school of dodgy innuendo, and are probably specially trained to ignore such outbursts, and totaly failed to grasp the importance of the event. Anyway - the bird itself, a mega-bombshell in the midsummer doldrums is posted below. Better pix can be found on the HKBWS website including pix of the bird being mugged by a pair of Black-winged Stilts. Cheers Mike

A stunning bird - a great observation, a fabulous story plus some good field photography on the web site. Just one question do we also get to see Miss Hong Kong

Mike,
And I'm out of town at the moment. Great news. I'm also amazed Bena had his wits about him. Neil. |
