I have not got the foggiest idea as to the name of this insect. Help with an ID will be very much appreciated.

Its definitely a tachinid, I think its Dexiosoma caninum - they've been a lot of them about the last few weeks..

Prosena siberita (Fabricius, 1775), note long proboscis.
