And I'll dare to say that this is a Whimbrel and not a Slender-billed Curlew!

This bird does look superficially very good for SBC. The bill proportions are spot on for the Moroccan adults and what can be seen of the plumage looks ok. Crikey.

This thread may get some interest if word gets out. I agree that overall plumage looks pretty good from what I know (not a lot...)

I can't see crown stripes and I guess a classic whimbrel would show them. I think we need actual expert opinion here. I'll stop looking at the images, I'm a firm believer and the more I look the more I get.

It appears to be calling in the first pic - Osprey0311 - if it was and you could hear it what did it sound like!?

Cheers,
Andrew

I'm no expert but I think this should be put on the rare bird forum just to attract more attention.

Agree with the idea to draw more attention (though also agree with Motmot that it's the small proportion of people with relevant knowledge that would really help!) However, since the ID Q&A forum remains appropriate, perhaps better for one of the mods to rename the thread to include "possible SbC"?

I see from the EXIF info that the bird was seen on 18th August, so I guess there's not much chance that it's still there to be studied or photographed more closely?

the underwing looks great - clean with few spots and tapering to dark, and nothing like a classic whimbrel or curlew...

I'm not at all an expert but i would dare to conclude that it might be a juv Numenius arquata (i hope that i'm wrong).
In the 1st (4517) photo i can not see a white tail with 4-5 bands, it seems dark imo.
The most distinctive element for a SBC (hence the name of the species) of the thin edge of the bill seems absent in all the photos.
The underside of the body seems more confusing, i think its white enough for a SBC. Anyway there are some light spots on the coverts which could exclude the target species.

I was thinking that the underwing was too clean for eurasian Curlew. This image on Bird Guides doesn't help that thought.

Taking into account the relative quality of photos..[no disrespect to photographer]!....it doesn't really 'fit the bill' for me for an SBC. I would have thought that flank spotting would appear more prominent....as for the bill?..well....a bit blurry...it might be finer than it 'appears'. Hopefully a few more pix might help. At moment i tend to agree with 'sternahirundo'....

hi,

the exact location would be interesting, osprey. ukraine certainly is within the potential migration route of the possible remaining SBC, but i guess more towards black sea (as i recall having seen a map of findings).

it doesn't look like an adult SBC to me. spots should be visible even in this crop, and 3 contrasting tail bands are not there either (slightly visible in first pic).

it doesn't look like whimbrel either.

juv arquata or juv tenuirostris???

Agree definitely not a Whimbrel - certainly a strange looking bird -
Have been looking at some old photos of SBC from Richard Porter for comparison (see http://www.hawar-islands.com/blog/id_stub.php) taken on 1 Jan 1984 at Hodeidah, Yemen - certainly worth looking at the video by Andy Butler as suggested by Dimitris in post 22 - undecided myself
