Northern Giant Petrel (Macronectes halli)
Three views of the Northern Giant Petrel, taken on 10 Nov 2003 near Crozet Island in the southern Indian Ocean.
Note the reddish tip to the beak which distinguishes it from the Southern Giant Petrel (greenish tip). Nikon D100 plus 80-400mm VR zoom lens. |

Brilliant photos, Derek. I'm surprised that noone has commented on them before. If only I'd known how to tell the giant petrels apart when I was in NZ, I'd possibly have ticked them both rather than giant petrel sp. (I was there in 1987, using an old field-guide that didn't realise there were two species!)
