Sandhill Cranes are Here!

Just spotted a hundred or so at FM 2004 and FM 646 in Galveston County!
They were flying above the rice fields. They just got here this morning.
Also many types of hawks and spotted snow geese yesterday. I'm so excited!

I'm new here. Hi everyone!

Sandy

Hi Sandy and welcome! 100 Sandhill Crane sounds like a great sight. Where is Galveston County (Texas)?

Cheers,
Benji

Oh, it's about 20 miles south of Galveston, TX. Galveston is just south of Houston about 40 minutes. We are about 11 O' Clock to the Gulf of Mexico.

Hi Sandy, and welcome to the forum. Our Sandhill Cranes started arriving back in the Southeast Corner of Arizona the 2nd week of October. We have thousands over winter here feeding on the corn fields. They are definitely a sight, here are a couple of photos of the cranes as they arrived on the 15th of October.

Nice to hear about the cranes' arrival.

Lisa, I love your pictures - the one with the 3 birds seems to me to have caught them in a less usual posture/angle (?). I wonder if they were just getting ready to land when you took the shot?

Gretchen, thanks, they were just starting to wheel into their final turn before landing, they were at about a 45 - 60 degree angle above me.

Ours hunt ahead of the creeping water as Wildlife refuges are flooded for the winter. Bugs and things.
