Sunday PBS program: watch it

"Nature In The Air" is the title of the PBS program about hummingbirds that will be shown on our local PBS station at 8:00 PM (PST). Check your local PBS station for the Nature Program.

Excellent documentary. I learned a few things from it. Did not realize that hummers are unique to the Western Hemisphere. Guess the trip across the pond is too much for them. Pity I can't remember the names, but two stand out. The one from South America with the long tail with two "platens' which he whips about like a juggler, and the one that dives, hitting 60+ MPH (~100KPH?) while creating a whistle with its tail feathers to show off to its prospective mate. The scientists in the show duplicated the sound by using a source of 60 mph wind in the lab acting on actual tail feathers. Amazing show!

Edited: Google tells me the diving chirper is the Anna's Hummingbird.
The one with the fancy tail feathers is called "Marvellous Spatuletail" Here is a link to a BBC video.:

Great show

Great show, great birds and cinematography.

The one with the "platens" is the Marvelous Spatuletail and the dive-bombing hummingbird is the Anna's.

Wish they could have shown the Fiery Topaz and the Rainbow-fronted Starfrontlet, but who can complain about a show that has all it had including the Velvet-breasted Coronet!

Thanks for supplying this link. It is still viewable -- the entire episode. And it doesn't lose too much in full-screen mode. Wonderful!
