Early Dollond Lumos
recently a pair of Dollond Lumos sold on a well known internet site http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
anybody on here who visits the Classic Binocular thread on Cloudy Nights may be familiar with my post around Wray binoculars and it's clones.(I am also compiling a 'Wray' database to try and make sense of it all) This binocular is interesting as it has the classic early 'Wray' double curved hinge arms, now I know early Wrays had this and I have seen the odd Dollond also but this pair appears very early! I also know that the French were at the forefront of technology regarding the making of items in aluminium and early Wrays were of 'sandcast' aluminium. I have often seen Dollond and Dollond & Aitchinson and plain Aitchinson binoculars that are obviously French imports so could it be that one of the companies named above bought in the sandcast aluminium bodies in from france and then built them up in this country? If someone on here did buy them could they get in touch via PM please. |
