Thumbs up Guardian Spirit of the East Bank

Just finished reading this book about the late R.A.Richardson.What a great read about an extremely talented birder, only wish I'd met him.

I agree - it is a fine account and it reveals much about the birding heritage of Cley too. I wonder if as many rarities would have been seen at Cley without him?

My copy is up for sale BTW - on Amazon, if anyone is interested in reading this huge book full of photo's and his fine drawings and cartoons.

Just treated myself to a copy today in Newcastle. Was browsing amongst the art books in Waterstones when I came upon it...TREASURE!!!!!!!!
And it was reduced as the cover was slightly shop soiled...but not enough to detract from it! Oh I do love a bargain!!!
Couldn't get home quick enough to settle down with a big mug of tea and browse through it and drool over all the glorious paintings and sketches.
Can't wait to get stuck in and read it...just as soon as I finish the biography of Niko Tinbergen which I'm in the middle of!!!

Yes it's a cracking book - he really was a character by all accounts. I missed him by a few years my first visit being in '81 as an impressionable young tyke who'd just read Bill Oddies LBBB.

Ina similar vein are the Norfolk sketchbooks by current Norfolk birder James McCallum. Also filled with field watercolours that really capture the birds. Worth a look at one of his books too......

Will do Tim....I think that was one of the books that I was planning to order from Waterstones in the next week or so...the sketches look truly mouth-watering!
