Stolen optics

If anyone gets offered a secondhand pair of Opticron Verano bins, a Kowa TSN663 Angled Scope and a Velbon carbon fibre tripod please let me know. That combination got nicked from my car in Peterborough this weekend.

Many thanks
Helen

Apologies for having posted this in a few different places but I wanted to be sure that as many as possible saw it.

You must be gutted. I refuse to leave any optics in my car, these people watch and will not think twice before smashing a window etc to get what they want.

That's terrible! If you were in the States I would offer up a binocular to you. Hope all turns out well. Bryce...

Really, really bad news Helen! Hasn't this happened to you before with your pinko scope?

I have heard that thieves target cars with RSPB stickers on them.

Oh Helen... such bad luck. I'm really sorry to hear that.

If necessary, I've a spare pare of bins I can loan you at the Bash. And might be able to bring a spare scope and tripod too... not a carbon fibre one though.

Commiserations from me too; you're really not very lucky with scopes are you. As Andrew said, I hope you're able to replace them soon - I'll be happy to lend you bins & a scope to tide you over.

Thanks for the sympathy and offers of help, everyone. That's really kind. I think I'm going to have to replace the bins straight away even though I can't really afford tombecause I can't bear the thought of being without bins for any length of time but borrowing a scope for the bash might be very welcome. I'm not sure what will happen with the insurance yet either as the evidence about how they got into the car is not clear.

Yup, second time, Joanne. I've always stored my optics in the car on the basis that my house had been broken into more often than my car but now the balance has tipped the other way I might have to rethink.

Some nasty types in Peterborough it sounds, but the car must be a more risky option - and a bigger battle when it comes to insurance (?). Bad luck Helen.

That's bad news H :-(
I've a pair of Viking Vistron 8x42 roof prisms if you'd like to borrow them until you can afford some new bins. Not optically great, but they're small, light and do a job. They are way better than just using your eyes. :-)
I keep them in my car too...better check they're still there!

*checks....they are*

Pah. You're my prime suspect. I now what you Fenlanders are like. Can you account for your whereabouts over the last 48 hours?

(Thanks very much - I'm just about to do some sums and see if I can magic some money out of somewhere to order a new pair. Although Vikings would be very apt with my ancestry. :-) )

Echo everyone else, sorry to hear that. Are you sure you aren't displaying 'help yourself' signs anywhere? :)

I would be nice and offer to give you some brand new classy binos, but unlike everyone else I don't have any spare ones. Sorry. Don't let any of those dodgy folk at the bash con you into a £300/day loan of a rubbishy scope.

(Yes Dr W, that means you...)

For rental of five days and over, I can do for £200/day for scope and bins, delivery included

Actually I was just about to generously offer bins and a scope for our Islay bash completely free of charge. But your suggestion has given me other ideas...

I guess if I ended up fleecing HE2 then it's actually your fault for corrupting me .

Hi Joanne,

Ths isn't directed at you but......

Don't ever attach bird associated stickers to your windows. Thieves know full well that the chances of a pair of £1,000+ binoculars in the boot are pretty high, not to mention the possibility of a sat nav and a scope. These guys couldn't care less about you or your loss.

Really sorry.

John

I used to have stickers plastered all over my last car but this one has none. And it was parked outside my house and not at a nature reserve or anything. Nothing valuable on display, not a nice car. Goodness knows what made them bother and I bet they have no idea of the value of what they've got. They'll probably car boot them for a tenner. :-)

I would keep a look out for your optics on the cash converter sites etc and see what comes up on the used optics lists of dealers, you never know...

Sorry to hear what's happened Helen, not what you need. As well as posting here and watching websites you'd do well to email round optics dealers just in case (Cley Spy, In Focus and the likes, include serial numbers if you have them). I know others have offered already but if you need the loan of a pair of bins then let me know, could possibly sort an old scope out too if you need it.

Thanks very much, everyone and for the tips. I've already rung local secondhand shops but I'll give the dealers a go too. Let me know if you see anything like them but I'm about to rebuy my bins this evening. I just can't bear the thought of not having them for long. The scope will have to wait until (if) the insurance pays up but I'm ok with a loan for the Islay bash so it's all good.

Cheers
H

The horse is out of the barn, but I aways store my binoculars in the trunk (if there is one) or in an inaccessible place in my pickup. But little will deter a thief who has adequate time to break windows and gain access/
