Fuerteventura birding holiday March 2010 (1 Viewer)

My partner and I are 2 days into a winter/spring holiday and staying at Caleta de Fuste on the west coast of Fuerteventura.
We have stayed around the Hotel and town since we arrived just patch watching, but today has been especially noteworthy.
This am we found a probable 2nd winter Ring billed gull on the shore with 2 immature Yellow legged gulls. Unfortunately we had left the camera back at the Hotel and the bird had departed before I could get back, so no photographic evidence.
This pm however I did get footage of a Red billed Tropicbird watched for at least 30mins off the headland.
Does anyone know how to get more info on the significance of these 2 sightings and who to report them to here on the Island?

Probably easiest to notify Ricard Gutierrez of the Rare Birds Spain Website.

I think they are both very good records, but tropicbirds have begun to turn up off one of the other Canary Islands (Lanzarote??) in the last couple of years.

Regards,

Stephen.

Hi Tony,

Having just got back from the island (I stayed in Jandia) I'm very jealous. You might want to contact Derek Bradbury, a resident birder on Fuerteventura: [email protected]

I may contact Derek today but perhaps you could indicate what areas you found productive esp for desert species. Went to Catalina Garcia Res and it was bone dry, though Roller seen briefly in flight.Where is all the fresh water for waders or birds generally to drink? Not seen desert species yet but will try today. Golf course at Caleta has provided the most enjoyable birding so far apart from the excitement of the tropicbird of course....

There is very little fresh water on the island. The island gets its fresh water by desalination. There is a reservoir at Los Molinos near Tefia. Last summer it was pretty empty with only a few birds on it. I found that the La Oliva area was best for desert species

Hi Tony,

I found the desert area between La Pared and Costa Calma excellent for most of the desert species although the bustard was difficult - a very long trip for you I'm afraid. We had been warned by Derek that there was very little standing water on the island so didn't really try. Good luck.
