Kenyan Raptor ID
Photographed in Tsavo East.
Any clues to species would be gratefully received. The closest image I could find was Wahlberg's Eagle; but there is no yellow on the beak. However, it was photographed at sunset so it could be showing as darker / redder than usual. |

I know nothing of that area, but your photo reminds me of this one: http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/sho...p?photo=276660

I believe it is a Wahlberg's Eagle. There is yellow on the beak. See below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahlberg%27s_Eagle And a close look at the beak of your bird shows yellow around the nostrils. In THE EAGLE WATCHERS at page 135 (Chapter 15) it says it is "probably Africa's most common eagle." Bob Last edited by ceasar : Thursday 27th May 2010 at 20:29. |

Bateleur was my immediate thought as well, though someone with East African experience may be able to eliminate tail-less individuals of other species?

It's an imm Bateleur - no tail, long wings and 'big' head. Nothing else that looks like it

Correct, I missed that short tail.
Fascinating read about the Bataleur in THE EAGLE WATCHERS! It's a great book and is as close to I'm ever going to get to actually "seeing" most of these birds! Bob |
