What birds have bright orange beaks?

Today for a short time there were four birds bathing on the shore of our pond. They were the size of a large duck. They had bright orange beaks with a white tip. The heads were gray with white rings around the eyes. The upper body was brown and there was a black strip from the middle of the head and down the middle of the back. The upper part of the wing was gray and the lower part black.
Any help in identifying these birds would be appreciated.

Black-bellied whistling duck? Out of range but fits some of your description.

Did they look like this?

If they did, I suggest contacting whatever the bird club is for SD, there seems to be only 1 previous record..

Can't think of any other species that would fit.
