Thanks, I thought a Cattle Egret has much more of a neck. (according to sasol guide to birds of southern africa)

It is retracted - when feeding it will extend it to the length depicted in most field guides.

here's a couple of shots that show how this family can retract or extend their necks. These are of a Squacco Heron. Hope this helps!
