The Jewel Hunter

Anyone read that book of Chris Gooddie yet, the guy that went to see all Pittas in one year? How is it?

Here's a very positive review by Charlie Moores:

And a rather grudging one by Steve Rutt:

I agree, the second review is also wetting one's appetite.

Oriental Bird Club

Perhaps a bit far to travel from Vietnam or Switzerland, but Chris Gooddie is giving a talk (The Jewel Hunter - all the pittas in one go) at the OBC AGM (open to all) in Cambridge on 30 Oct 2010.

I have heard the talk and am in the process of reading the book.

I've never seen a pitta in the wild nor likely to, but I enjoyed the talk and the book is very well written, he has an entertaining turn of phrase, lots of detailed info on the terrain/habit of the birds other encounters he has had along the way.

highly recommended.

It was one of the best 'birding adventures' book I have ever read. Once I started it I could not put it down. Having spent a whole year birding around the world and seeing a few pittas along the way I really admired the determination shown in his quest!

A must-read book for sure!
