Confirm ID Request - Belted Kingfisher (female)? Round Rock, TX, USA
Took these snaps today. The bird was very cautious so it kept the large pond between us at all times. I heard a very distinctive staccato call that sounds like the call listed on allaboutbirds, and I see an equally distinctive marking pattern of dark blue, and white with a black bib. I have shots with the crest on its head up and down. It was neat. I also have a shot of it with some sort of fish - it seems to have had a good day fishing as I stood by shooting these terribly blurry shots.
What do you all think? |

It's my first kingfisher! Hooray!
I was trying to photo an elusive LBB and heard the kingfisher's crazy call. Totally stole the show. |

Whoops - you're right. I confused the two symbols.

Definitely a male, IMO. Even though I see them often, Belted Kingfishers are one of the most difficult birds I've ever attempted to photograph because they are so skittish. How close were you able to get? The closest I've ever been was when one plunged into the lake water near me to capture a fish but, of course, I had no camera at the time.

I couldn't get very close at all. These shots are extreme crops from a 250mm lens on a cropped (APC-S) sensor (so the 35mm equivalent would be 400mm). I'm not very good at gauging distance, but I would guess that I was a couple hundred feet away.
