i d please

hi can you id this moth found in harlow essex i am not very good with moths this one seems very nondescript but i like the shape thanks paul

Hi Paul.
From the outline it looks like one of the numerous species of 'Pug' moth. I assume it was about 3/4" or less across. The picture is too dark for further ID. Sorry.

This looks like a Willow Beauty to me. I get quite a few and most of the ones in my garden seem to be of the dark perfumaria form.

Hi Paul

Hope you don't mind, I've taken the liberty of adjusting your image (it was just too dark to tell). Assuming it was fairly large, it seems like a Willow Beauty or similar to me.

HI THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO I HAVE A BOOK ON THE MOTHS OF THE BRITISH ISLES BY RICHARD SOUTH BUT IT ISNT LISTED ,IS IT VERY COMMON? HARLOW IS I NEWISH TOWN AND ALL THE PUBS WERE NAMED AFTER MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES THE WILLOW BEAUTY BEING ONE OF THEM THANKS PAUL

Hello Paul,

Richard South's books on Moths came in 2 volumes, the Willow Beauty is in Volume 2. They are available from time to time through websites like:-

http://www.abebooks.com

simply type in the authors name, title of the book and click on search. I would advise you to stick to British bookshops. Postage from abroad is very expensive.
