peregrine in leeds city centre

anyone know any history on the peregrine in leeds...observing it from the civic hall, where it is being mobbed by gulls, seems to being harrased a little too much and is being driven from the building college, to the LMU and the civic hall!!!

;D

I spotted them last year, haven't seen them since. Then again I haven't been back there for a while.

There was one that roosted / used it as plucking point on the Town Hall for a couple of years sometime in the 90's.
During the mid 80's I watched one take down a pigeon in the grounds of St John's Church by the side of what used to be Lewis's. Still one of the best views of a peregrine I've had.
They used to be fairly common when the pigeon roost in Leeds was sizeable.

this may well be the offspring of the pair from the 90's but it certainly isnt them as they disappeared...one by one...towards the end of the decade...the kestrels have moved into the town hall and merrion house and harras each other over thorseby...this peregrines a new one for sure

as an aside, I'd heard a few tales of the buzzards at arncliffe crag...but when they were pointed out to me they were not buzzards but Ravens!!!! Also, coming home from work in the gridlocked snow, chose to take a 'long cut' round adel/eccup..the wife pointed to the banked verge and said have you seen these two here...two crows sledging on their backs!!!!

I saw a large female peregrine carry prey (not, I think, a pigeon) on to the roof of West Riding House where she began to pluck it; Dec 27th.

Saw 2 peregrines on the town hall 2 years ago. From the way one was calling they seemed to be adult and juvenile.

Peregrine flew from Civic Hall to Town Hall where it landed on clock tower on Tuesday 11th January at 13 00. It was calling but no sign of a second individual.

Female again today, 22/1/11, over Briggate at 11.15; later perched for some time on top of W Riding House.

As one of the two recorders for the Leeds Birdwatchers Club I would be pleased to receive any reports of Peregrine (or any other birds) in Leeds. Apart from a query raised on Birdforum about prey items in the Town Hall clock tower we have hardly ever received a Peregrine record from the City Centre. I did two tetrads covering that area for the BTO Atlas last year without a sniff, so I would appreciate any more information. With pairs breeding in most major cities it seemed only a matter of time before they moved into Leeds but so it would be nice to pin them down. Obviously this is sensitive information, so please PM me with any reports.
Incidentally Raven is a much rarer bird in Leeds than Peregrine, so I would appreciate more info on that sighting too.

It's a good job there aren't any Jimmy's Hospital staff posting apart from myself as some of them swear there are ravens hanging around there.

re the posting about prey items - that would be me. People are still telling me that they have seen peregrines but I haven't seen one myself recently and I've not been asked to look at any prey items for a while. Council staff working at civic hall have told me that they have seen birds perching on windowsills. I'll PM you if I get any specific information

shame I missed it - I was walking back and forth between Leonardo, Merrion and Park Row today so you'd think I'd have heard it!

Hello

This is my first post. From where i'm sitting i've got a pretty good view of the peregrines. They sit/perch? on near the top of the building most days. They're both there now. One was feeding earlier, bits of fluff and fur were floating down the side of the building.

Been watching them on and off for about 3 months. I'm six floors up but you can see them from the street.

Good stuff tinkangeru. Keep an eye on them. It's an important record for Leeds.

Here's some of my rubbish record shots from this afternoon. The first bird might actually just be a pigeon but it didn't bat an eyelid when the bird on the left in pic 2 flew in calling. My excuse is that I didn't fancy carrying bins around the town centre.

Just delete the references or posts now - maybe no harm done but no need to pepetuate the potential problem.

anyone know if there are any rules and regulations regarding bulilding work and peregrines. The building that the birds are using as a cliff is up for a refurb. I don't know the extent of the work but i'd like to make sure the owners go throught the right procedures

Peregrines are protected at all times under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
