Raptor ID Norfolk, Virginia

I photographed this Raptor last Sunday and I automatically assumed it was a young Red-tailed Hawk. I posted an image of it on a critique forum and some questioned if it was actually a young Red-shouldered Hawk rather than a yong Red-tailed Hawk.

So I ask your expert opinion on what type of Hawk this actually is.

Duane

It is a young Red-shouldered Hawk. The famous barring on the secondaries is well shown in the second photo. Nice shots!

Best,
Jim

I agree with juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. Great shots, Duane!

Thank you for the ID. I wish all my first encounters with birds ended up like this...first time seeing a Red-shouldered Hawk in person let alone photographing one.
