"Joe" and "Jordan" aren't exactly rare names so it's not that unlikely that there is/was a birder named Joe Jordan out there. It's when you see an Ashley Grimes Hide or a Remi Moses Hide that you start to sniff a conspiracy.

Always liked Joe Jordan, part of that fine tradition of stealing Leeds' best players and bringing them to us.

Many many years ago when I was a kid (I guess it must have been in the late 70's) I went to a RSPB meeting in Blackpool (at the Imperial Hotel I think-classy eh?) and was amazed to see former Bolton striker Alan Gowling. He might even have been taking on the door fees or pouring out the tea.....................

Alan Gowling was still playing in the late 70s

Perhaps Joe Jordan the fearless, toothless striker did have a hide name after him as he certainly ruffled the feathers of a few defenders as i recall.

John Bird - ex Newcastle
Shaune Teale - ex Villa
John Sparrow - ex Chelsea

can they not be similarly honoured?

Mark Robins - ex Man U

Maybe Rail Madrid could sponsor a hide too.

Mystery solved, just got back from a week in Norfolk where I made a few enquiries. Both the Joe Jordan and George Washington hides are named after two 'old boys' who did a lot of voluntary work on the reserve.George Wahington was described as being 80ish,looking as though he didn't have a penny in the world but actually drove a Rolls Royce.

The mysterious Joe Jordan

Joe Jordan was a voluntary warden at Stiffkey Marsh prior to his death a few years back. Born and bred at Stiffkey he was a proper old Norfolk character, rescued many people off the marsh and did plenty of years in looking after nesting terns. I think he got an OBE or CBE or some such accolade. The hide was named after him. Washington Hide was named after George Washington, a wiley old cockney who moved to Norfolk in the late 70s/early 80s and became a voluntary warden at Holkham. Another great character (still alive), ex commando from WW2, who did much of his war time training at Holkham. And yea despite his appearance and down to earth attitudes he was a wealthy ol boy with a Rolls.

Sadly no hide yet named after any legendary footballers at Holkham - if so it would have been Duncan Forbes and Kevin Keelan hides....

Brilliant, thanks for that. Must be impressive to have an hide named after you whilst you are still alive.

I remember Joe Jordan when i worked on Blakeney Point for 2 superb Summers in the early 80's (Lesser Crested Tern) - keen as mustard and a real character, he was knocking on then but could hotfoot it up to the point with the best of them.

I am just a bit surprised that there is only 1 other birder who remembers him considering the lifts he used to give to other birders up to Wells, Holme, Titchwell etc............

Having annualy visited Stiffkey campsite a few years ago. I always used to bump into an elderly man with his border colley, he walked the marshes at Siffkey dailey and new the area extrenmely well. He worked as a warden in the past protecting the terns on Scolthead Island. Basically he spent his life on the marshes and helping with bird consevation his name was Joe Jordan marsh man. The hide was named after him at Holkam there was also a book written about his life.
I did not see him one year at Stiffkey and was told by a local that in a storm he went into the hide at Stiffkey, the door blew and hit him which fractured his skull and he died, he was a good age. Regards, John
