Kestrel Taking Mouse

Hi Everyone,

On Tuesday a kestrel took a mouse from our garden lawn. It hovered over the garden for about half a minute and then plunged onto the field mouse before flying off with its prize into the distance. I was very excited indeed and thought that i would share it with you all.

Graham

Great sighting, Graham! It's exciting to watch these fierce little hunters be successful!

I have loved watching American Kestrels hunting from atop wheat shocks in the Amish countryside nearby. I have seen them dive headfirst into another shock in pursuit of food.

And the thing that made it even more amazing is that we live right next to a main road.

Hi Graham,

Main roads are very good for Kestrels - lots of long grass on the verges, which (unlike most farmland) never gets sprayed with chemicals. So it is a haven for mice, etc, etc, in there.

I should have added that i meant a sub-urban main road, not a motorway. But i know what you mean, as i often see them hovering over the fields beside the motorway.

Happy Birding
