Angry PM gives Stork cull the green light

Below a link to an article on The Nation (Bangkok). Prime Minister Thaksin wants to cull the Openbill Storks as carriers of bird flu. I like his comments re. "Let them protest, because Thailand is a free country". I suggest that BF member do indeed protest, and maybe give Thailand a miss this year. Wild birds have always carried strains of bird flu. Mr. Thaksin's move is purely politically motivated.

I was living in Kampala Uganda back in the 80s when the City Council decided to cull Marabou Storks that nest all over the capital, in many of the main streets.
There was uproar and the locals protested against this because if the Marabous weren't around, they reasoned, there would be nothing to clean the streets as the Kampala City Council staff were reknowned for their total negligence in this (and other matters).

Thank goodness, Shinawatara did not succeed in buying into Liverpool FC or I would have felt really rotten.

Hi Dan,

The Marabous are still there, but Kampala has become cleaner.
