Hello,
I am a very new bird enthusiast and I have a question related to this Cormorant thread.

I just got back from Costa Rica where I saw many Neo-Tropical Cormorants (lake Arenal). One of which was confusing to me. It very much sounds like the bird described in the above thread. It had an all white head and neck going down to its breast. It also had a black vertical stripe on its head near the eye. The date of the siting was June 1st 2011.

The subspecies talk has me a little confused. Are you guys referring to Great cormorants? If so, could that be what we saw in Costa Rica or just a Neo Tropical Cormorant with a more unusual breeding plumage?

My first impression of what you describe is an Osprey. (some details are wrong, though).
