Sira Curassow

Gastañaga, MacLeod, Brooks & Hennessey 2011. Distinctive morphology, ecology, and first vocal descriptions of Sira Curassow (Pauxi [unicornis] koepckeae): evidence for species rank. Ornitología Neotropical 22(2): 267-279.

[With thanks to Manuel Plenge for notification on NEOORN.]
  • BirdLife International:
"Taxonomic note The two disjunct populations currently treated as subspecies are virtually certain to represent two different species as they are separated by more than 1000 km, differ in morphology, song, time of singing, altitude at which found, and habitat that they occupy (Gastañaga et al. (in prep))".

  • del Hoyo 1994 (HBW 2)

  • Gastañaga, Hennessey & MacLeod 2007. Rediscovery of Southern Horned Curassow Pauxi unicornis koepckeae in Cerros del Sira, Peru. Cotinga 28: 63–66.

I flushed one without seeing it on the trail last year at Sira. It made an alarm call as the one on xeno-canto.
