Dragonfly id - Dungeness in Kent

Hi there,
Photographed this medium to large dragonfly that was frequenting the area between the car park and boardwalk today at Dungeness RSPB, could only manage side shots as was mainly flying, looked quite brown in flight, but cannot seem to match it to anything in the books...need a expert opinion please...

Cheers

Nick

thanks for the info Paul,
I have just been looking at images on google and the male Migrant Hawker seem a lot brighter than this individual, would it be where it has just emerged?
Cheers

It looks a bit mauve on my monitor which could mean the dragonfly was cold or it could well be immature (although not a teneral).

Looks like a female mixta (migrant hawker) to me. You can see the side of the ovipositor and the fatter basal segments of the abdomen without accessory genitalia. Females are usually much less blue than males.

Yes - the ovipositor (and the lack of a lower anal appendage!) are blindingly obvious now you have mentioned it.
