Birding in NJ/Eastern PA
Hi all. I'm new here & not sure if this is the right place for my question...Anybody willing to share any wonderful birding locations here in good old New Jersey? I've found some info online - sometimes it's good, sometimes not so good. Tony & I are always looking for new places to explore with our cameras. I know there are no guarantees but I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

If you are not already familiar with the New Jersey bird finding guide, you may want to buy a copy: http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Finding-.../dp/0813530857
Best, Jim

Cape May, NJ (click here) may be a good place, also the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (click here) area might be considered.

Ellen -
I'm from PA but frequently go to New Jersey for the bird photography opportunities. Making recommendations sort of depends on where you are in the state. If you're north of Trenton, I might make different recommendations as opposed to if you are south. Generally speaking, the NJ shore has zillions of great places: Sandy Hook, the Toms River area, Barnegat Light area, the Forsythe NWR (that Larry mentioned) is superb, and then of course Cape May which, to many, is the pinnacle of NJ birders. Thanks for replying everyone! I looked at the book on Amazon & may have to add it to my wish list. Someone did recommend the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge & we hope to make a trip there soon. Although I've been to Cape May, I've never scouted for birds there...where exactly does one go? And Chris, I live in Hunterdon County near Interstate 78, about 20 miles from the PA border. PA is certainly not out of the question. Last weekend we went to Nockamixon State Park in PA (first time) and were treated to an osprey catching several fish. Love the raptors! Thanks again.

Your best source of information about birding in Cape May is the Cape May Bird Observatory: http://www.birdcapemay.org/
Cape May is best during migration, specially Fall migration (from late August to November). |

If you have not already done so, maybe join this listserv and post your questions there--> http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NJBD.html
It's very active and a good place for information concerning what's going on bird-wise in NJ. I will also second the vote for the Boyle birding guide. It is the 'must have' if you want to familiarize yourself with all the good birding hotspots in NJ. |
