Can anyone please confirm if this is a Neglected Rustic. Caught in moth trap in my garden in North East Yorkshire

Hi,
I've been speaking to Ian off forum and although it's difficult to judge size from the photo, at first glance it looked to me like a Lesser Yellow Underwing.

Anybody else have any thoughts ?

Regards
Damian

I do not think that you can tell whether its a Lesser Yellow Underwing or a Neglected Rustic from this photo categorically but I would favour the first.

There is a clue in the name of the first which would be helpful and obviously the hindwing would clinch it! I remember a friend telling me of prodding a Red Underwing on the wall of a factory in Sussex and to see if it would show some hindwing for a work colleague only to have a flash of blue past his nose as it flew off towards the roof. Queue expletives!

Hindwings are very useful identification features and as Ian Lewington himself wrote in Atropos, Skinner is complimentary to Waring. We each have our preferences.

All the best
