Well..Its looks like a Turdus rather than a Zoothera and my first guess was a Dusky Thrush but I guess thats a little unlikely in Kashmir.
Its got a supercilium and well marked underparts and I'm afraid nothing else is springing to mind. Hopefully someone else will have a clue.

Think it's a juv. Pied Thrush (Zoothera Wardii). I'm almost certain none of the other Zothera or Turdus thrushes to be seen in Kashmir in any age plumage have a spotted back & wingbars. I stand to be corrected though!

Its maybe a long shot but could it be a kind of Fieldfare [Turdus pilaris] ?
http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/bi...ily_ID=201&p=2 The spotted wings, supercilium, streaked throat and barring seem to match, except the color of the head. Besides Fieldfare's have been recorded in Kashmir. http://www.delhibird.org/checklists/..._&_kashmir.htm http://www.kashmirnetwork.com/birds/lawrence.html

I should think this is a turdus and no zoothera (these are strange creatures to us euro's with their relatively large eye and or small head)
and it most resembles Fieldfare, in my humblest of opinions cheers, HouseCrow |

It might be a Pied Thrush, but I still think it looks much more like a Turdus (pictures can lie)
Its not a Fieldfare, the spotting on the underparts has v-shaped flecks (which is why it reminds me so much of Dusky Thrush). Fieldfare has rounder spots and would presumably be thousands of miles north just now anyway

Right.. I now own the Helm book on Thrushes :) and its a lovely bit of ornithological pornography!
I have a couple of additional suggestions: Juv White-collared Blackbird, but my particular favourite.. juv Tickell's Thrush.... I'm almost certain its the latter.

I can only find pics of adults - http://www.indiabirds.com/obc/Images.../tickthrsw.jpg
shape looks ok for cyberdoc's bird.... and here is the illustration - with a note that the warm flank colouration is variable

most interesting and yes the adults are Tickells... and so it would seem is the baby... there is a marked resemblence between the baby and the juv above.... case closed I say!
Isn't the juv amazingly stongly marked when the adult is so bland! Us Europeans should be interested in this - I believe there is one record in Europe - an old one on Helgoland!

Should there be a link to a bird image somewhere, maybe?
