Hello from Herts!

Hi everyone,

Having found this forum earlier in the year, now I'm wondering why on earth I've hardly been back since - the range of recent threads looks excellent!

By way of introduction, I'm originally from near Gt Yarmouth, in Norfolk, and have been a keen birder since the early nineties (my early teens). Local patches at Breydon Water and Yarmouth cemetery (remember the fantastic RF Bluetail - Dad and I twitched from school in my lunch hour!) kept the interest developing. My parents have now moved to Potter Heigham in the Norfolk Broads area, so trips home usually feature the coastal stretch around Horsey and Waxham, and Rush Hills at Hickling.

I went to university in Cambridge, and not having a car, was consequently out and about a bit less. However, I put that problem right early last year, and have been birding (and, dare I whisper, twitching & year listing) more and more ever since. I've also got hooked on digiscoping - yet another Coolpix 4500 owner.

Since October, I've been living in Cheshunt in the Lee Valley north of London, and commuting to work in the city. Best find in the valley so far is a Firecrest, but I'm sure there's more to come. I've also spent a fair bit of time this summer looking for butterflies, and learning my British dragonflies.

To everyone on the forums - hope to see you soon out in the field, or if not, this looks like it might be the next best thing!

Good birding,

David Bradnum

Hi David, a warm welcome to birdforum from all the staff here. We hope you enjoy the site, I'm sure there's plenty here to interest you, butterflies, birds or whatever. I'm to the west of you, but I think you've got the better birding side of the county.... though still not quite like Norfolk
regards,
Andy

Hi David

Welcome to the forum

I'm just over the border from you in Harlow. Occasionally to be found at Rye Meads and Amwell.

Tim,

Are you still a teacher in Yarmouth? By strange coincidence, my Dad teaches in Gorleston (maths at Lynn Grove, for what it's worth).

Sure I must have bumped into you out birding at some point. Probably autumn last year, when I was in the happy period between ending university and starting work, and therefore could be out pretty much all day every day! Shame it wasn't a particularly good September - I had to start work in early October, having seen much less than I'd hoped for.

Oh well, here's to a good run of birds in Norfolk this year:
