Canon 300D and Sigma Lenses
Hi,
Time for a new lens (i am new to bird watching and photography) and I was wondering how the Sigma 170-500 APO lens is working with a 300D. Money is an issue with me. The only other reasonable choice for me would be a 75-300 Canon IS USM lens. Thoughts on what I should do? I want to spend around $600.00 US |

Hi Cary,
I picked up the Sigma 100-300, 1:4 APO IF a couple of weeks ago in Bangkok for USD 500.00 and am really pleased with the results.

Hi Cary & welcome to BF,
we had a discussion recently about results from a couple of the lenses you mention. Hope it helps in your decision making. http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=20002 Des. |

Hi cary1952,
I've been using the 300D + Sigma 170-500 APO for about 4 months now and I've got no complaints about either piece of kit, but if, like me you are on a restricted budget then the Sigma lens is the obvious choice. |

I too use the 300d and Sigma 170 - 500, which I am currently awaiting return from the manufacturers after re-chipping*. If you can find a second-hand lens - it makes even more sense, I've been getting fairly respectable results from this lens at 500mm with a x2 converter....that's basicaly 1600mm !!
You will also need a tripod (......prob' will anyway - this is a big cumbersome beast !) and a wired remote - fairly cheap. *Older Sigma lenses will not use auto-focusing throughout their focal length without re-chipping by the manufacturer - but it's not expensive to have done. Hope this helps, Chris. |
