Heard another three singing whilst on my way to work yesterday, and saw my first returning Sand Martins.

First Chiffchaff in West Kent yesterday. There is always one in th same copse at the end of my road. Several more singing in area today.

Today - Baillon's Crake in Co. Wexford; Alpine Swifts in Co. Clare and Outer Hebrides; Black Kite in Co. Wicklow; Woodchat Shrike in Co. Waterford; 2 Hoopoes on Isles of Scilly plus others in Cornwall and Devon; Richard's Pipit in Dorset; Sedge Warbler in Kent; Whitethroat in Cumbria;

When I was in Aqaba ,Jordan on 3rd/4th march plenty of Redstarts, Chiffchaff, Whitehroat, lesser whitethroat
not seen any migrants yet myself but in east lancashire - lrp arrived over 7 days ago, sand martins, chiffchaff and ring ousel this week. also a sandwich tern. |

this is about the right time, and it was around the 3rd week of march last year that I first heard them, but these could be overwintering birds returning early to their sites, as some have stayed in East Anglia the last few years. I believe they are one of the early migrants though, so if you have sites near you, it may be worth checking out. regards dave |
